Based on a research released, the percentage of 5G smartphones shipped in India grew to 31% in 2022, with 5G shipments climbing 74% (year over year).

In 2022, the nation shipped 5G smartphones with an estimated value of $20 billion.

With a 23% market share, Samsung was the market leader in the 5G space, and OnePlus came in second with a 15% share.

"Driven by a resilient consumer appetite to switch and upgrade, the premium smartphone market continued to gain traction. In fact, the uber-premium smartphone segment (Rs 1,00,000 and above) grew a whopping 95 per cent YoY," said Menka Kumari, Analyst- Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR).

However, shipments of smartphones in India fell by 8% YoY and the whole mobile market fell by 17% YoY in 2022.

"All said, the overall smartphone market continued to post a decline, driven by the tough market conditions in H2 2022," Kumari added.

Shipments of smartphones fell by 28% on a quarterly basis in Q4 2022.

Shipments did, however, increase by 12% and 41% YoY in the premium and super-premium smartphone segments, respectively.

Xiaomi (21%), Samsung (19%), and Vivo (14%), who took the top three slots in the smartphone market, were followed by realme (14%) and OPPO (14%). (10 per cent).

Due to low customer confidence brought on by expensive devices, the feature phone market as a whole fell by 34% YoY.

"We anticipate the tough macroeconomic conditions to persist in the first half of the year. The silver lining continues to be the growth in 5G smartphone shipments. It will be a big year for 5G in India," said Shipra Sinha, Analyst-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR.
